THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR A VERY WELL-ATTENDED GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING!

Sisters & Brothers,

What a wonderful turn out!  Thank you for making this GMM such a huge success and for helping us, your Executive, run your Local.  A big thanks and a gift of appreciation for his hard work and dedication to the Union movement went to Andrew Tersigni (Past President).  A big thanks to Jaime Brenes Reyes who, as Acting President and his first time chairing a GMM did a wonderful job; and of course to the rest of the Executive for their reports and their hard work on behalf of all our 1,300 members.

A very special thanks goes out to Charlotte McCallum, a dedicated Unit 2 member who once again opted to give of her time and energy towards running the upcoming elections at the next AGM -  Thank you Charlotte.  Charlotte also, at this meeting,  declared nominations officially open for all Exec positions.

We would also like to thank Len McCarthy (Unit 2) for volunteering and becoming the newly-elected Guelph/Humber Rep. -  WELCOME ABOARD!

At this meeting, the following motion was also brought to the floor, debated, voted on, and carried:

We thank you one and all for giving of your time and helping to make this Third General Membership Meeting of the Academic Year a very, very successful one.

And last but not least, Congratulations to the winners! - Daniel Wettlaufer (CCJP)  for correctly filling out the “GOOD OF THE UNION CROSSWORD #14” and winning the $100 prize; and to Trish Altass (SOAN), Ian Morgan (CHEM), and Ahmed Mahmood (SOE) for winning the 5, 3, and 2 Bob’s Dogs Tickets respectively.

International Human Rights Day – December 10

Equal RIghts - CALM

This December 10, 2011 marks the 63rd anniversary of the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Despite the passing of the Declaration of Human Rights, the wide-spread violations of human rights continues to exist in countries around the world regardless if they are from the global south or global north. The UN Declaration states “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers” – Article 19.

On this December 10, as we continue to use our right to freedom of expression here in Ontario to protect public services and demand international equality.

December 6 – National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

December 6th commemorates the anniversary of the 1989 École Polytechnique Massacre, in which 14 women were singled out for their gender and murdered.

Today we reflect on these losses, and work for change.

Women In Crisis will hold their annual vigil at The Boathouse, on December 6th, at 6:00 p.m. Click Here for more information.

December 1st – World AIDS Day

On World AIDS Day, we commemorate those who have lost their health or lives to HIV/AIDS.

We also know that we are too far from the goal of universal testing, prevention, treatment and care. Canada has, in fact, been criticized for its low levels of financial contribution to this global issue. We need to advocate for an accessible and supportive system.

As members of our Union and our community, you can use today as an opportunity to confront the stigma and discrimination that surround this illness.

In our community, the AIDS Committee of Guelph and Wellington County will mark World AIDS Day with an HIV/AIDS Vigil.

The vigil will take place Dec. 1 from 7 to 8 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at the corner of Norfolk and Suffolk streets.  Everyone is welcome. For more information, visit www.aidsguelph.org/vigil.
