Protest Proroguing!
On December 30th Stephen Harper announced that he will be Proroguing Parliament and suspending democracy until March 3. This is the second time he has done this in under two years. Proroguing means:
- All 37 bills being debated in Parliament are thrown in the trash. Discussion on bills starts from scratch in March, wasting months of hard work by all parties. These bills included new crime legislation, limits on credit card insurance rates, etc.
- Committees investigating accusations of torture of Afghan detainees stop working
- Discussions and decisions about the pension crisis affecting Canada’s seniors stops
- Questions about Canada’s inaction at the Copenhagen climate-change summit are silenced. Opportunities to move forward with Canada’s plan for sustainable development are stalled for over a month.
- Your MPs cannot raise your concerns in Ottawa
In Guelph there will be a rally to protest the proroguing starting in St. George’s square on Jan 23rd at 1:00pm.

International Day of Remembrance & Action Against Violence Against Women
On December 6th it will be 20 years since 14 young women were killed at the École Polytechnique in Montreal in what has become known as the Montreal Massacre. This day has become symbolic in the fight to end violence against women and it is part of our collective struggle to end violence in the workplace, the home and the community. In 1991, Canada’s Parliament declared December 6th a National Day of Mourning and the National Day to End Violence Against Women and as members of CUPE we ask that you take a moment to reflect on the events of that day.
Twenty years after the events in Montreal in 1989, women continue to be the target of violence in homes, workplaces, educational institutions and elsewhere. Every year dozens of women in Canada are killed by men, many of whom are current or former partners. Similarly every year tens of thousands of women and their children must flee their homes fearing for their lives.
Events in Guelph include:
Screening of the dramatic film Polytechnique about the Montreal Massacre
December 2nd – 5:30 – UC 103
Community Vigil with speakers, performances and art work
December 6th – 6pm – Galleria at Guelph City Hall
Thanks for a well-attended GMM
Thanks to everyone who came out to the General Membership Meeting on Nov 26th. Members who were present heard updates on the work of the executive, accepted a budget update, passed a budget amendment, heard an update on the job cuts campaign and accepted a notice of motion for bylaw changes at the next GMM.
Congratulations to Allison, Jahangir & Emeka for winning the draw!
Transgender Day of Remembrance
Thank you to everyone who attended the event in commemoration of Transgender Remembrance Day this past Friday (Nov 20th)! The event was a HUGE success and it could not have happened without the support and participation of all who attended.
I would also like to thank OUTline, the Gender Resource Centre for Gender Empowerment and Diversity and the CSA Human Rights Office for collaborating and co-planning the event!
In solidarity,
Jess Maurice
