Union Seeks Employer’s Answers Prior To Bargaining

We remain committed to the letter and intent of bargaiining in good faith as enshrined in the Ontario Labour Relations Act.As you all know by now, the current Collective Agreements for both Unit 2 & Unit 1 expire this coming August 31st, 2010.  In preparation for the upcoming negotiations for both Units, you have responded very enthusiastically to the Surveys that were sent to you last month.

We are in the process of formulating our issues and writing the relevant language that we will be presenting to the employer at the bargaining table.  In advance of this we have presented the employer with a set of questions. The answers to these questions, together with your survey responses will dictate how the Union proceeds at the bargaining table. Click here to review the set of questions.

The Union is now in full preparation mode.  We are holding our all-day Bargaining School on June 14th and a Bargaining Support meeting is scheduled for June 7th.  Soon after, we will be sending the Employer our Letter of Intent to bargain for new Collective Agreements.

At this stage, we thank all of you who responded to the surveys and ask you to keep following our updates and continue to participate as well as you have so far.

In Solidarity,
Your Executive

SURVEYS & BALLOTS ACCEPTED TILL APRIL 27th! ENTER TO WIN $1000, $300, or $200

Hi Sisters and Brothers,

Since the office will be closed due to an Executive School on Monday (April 26), we will be accepting your Survey Responses and your Ballots for a chance to win one of three Professional Development/Tuition Fee Rebate Prizes until:

Thank you.
________

As you know, your Collective Agreement expires this August 31st, 2010.

We will be entering into negotiations with the employer (the university) to bargain for a new Collective Agreement. This survey will help us gather the information and data needed to craft our proposals and to substantiate our arguments when we meet the employer at the bargaining table, hopefully over the summer.

This is your chance to have your say and help in creating your Union’s package of proposals for the upcoming negotiations.

PLEASE – Don’t forget to print the Ballot at the end of the survey and drop it at the Union office to ENTER THE DRAW for a chance to win one of three Professional Development / Tuition Fee Rebate Cheques:

1st       Prize – $1000
2nd      Prize – $  300
3rd       Prize – $  200

Thank you for participating.

Your Executive

UPDATE – No Strike at Guelph-Humber

To all TAs and Sessionals with appointments at Guelph Humber:
The Ontario Labour Relations Board has now announced the results of the Vote  at the Colleges and there will not be  a Strike at Guelph-Humber or any of the other Colleges.

The University had been in discussions with Humber College to determine a plan in the case of a strike, including the impacts on CUPE 3913 members working at Guelph Humber.

On Thursday, February 11th, the college faculty voted, in a vote supervised by the Ministry of Labour, on a final offer from the Employer. The vote was very close, and the results, based on the outstanding mail-in and provisional ballots are now in.  Updates on the vote tally can be found on the OPSEU Website.

In the meantime if you have any questions, please contact the office at x56268 or cupe3913@uoguelph.ca.

Members endorse extension of Collective Agreements until Aug 31st, 2010

CAsAs you all know, the Collective Agreements (CAs) that we have with the University were set to expire on August 31, 2009.  The Executive and the Bargaining Support team have been meeting for the past 2 months, both to prepare for any new proposals and to discuss the current climate (both economic and political), and the best way of approaching this round of bargaining.

We looked at other public-sector Locals in bargaining during the midst of this “economic crisis” and saw the level of concessions being tabled in those negotiations.  We also took into consideration the University’s public stance and statements regarding its financial dilemmas.  While we understand that this “crisis” is not of our making, we realized that we may end up wasting our energies and our members’ resources simply to keep what we already have in our CAs — instead of actually negotiating improvements to them.

Given this, the Local decided that our resources are best put towards fighting to prevent the currently contemplated Sessional and TA job cuts, rather than fighting back concessions at the table.  To that end, CUPE 3913 has reached an agreement with the University of Guelph to extend both current CAs, without amendment, for another year, until August 31, 2010.

This decision was endorsed by the members at the last General Membership Meeting.

Copies of the communication between the Union and the University can be found here.

If you have any questions about the extension, please contact the office at 519.824.4120 x56268 or email cupe3913@uoguelph.ca.
